Caritas in Veritate Conference

In 2008, with leadership from Dan Finn, professor of economics and theology from St. John’s University, and Paul Caron, retired head of JP Morgan in Belgium and Switzerland, the Institute organized a conference to discuss the relevance of Catholic Social Thought to international economic relations. In 2010, the conference papers were published by Oxford University Press as The True Wealth of Nations. An ongoing multidisciplinary reflection has ensued, most recently resulting in a Vatican-invited conference to reflect on Pope Benedict XVI’s social encyclical, Caritas in Veritate.

In October 2010, twenty-five scholars from economics, sociology, ethics, and theological faculties in the United States, Europe, and Africa met at the Vatican for two days of intense discussion along with representatives from the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace and leaders from the business community. The papers from this conference and being edited for a forthcoming volume from Oxford University Press.
