Alan Kreditor
Emeritus Senior Vice President for University Advancement

Alan Kreditor became the University of Southern California’s senior
vice president for university advancement in 1992. As one of five senior
vice presidents at the university, Kreditor directed USC’s relations
with the philanthropic and volunteer communities, including prominent individual
supporters, charitable foundations, corporate donors and alumni until his
formal retirement in June, 2008.
During his tenure as senior vice president, Kreditor spearheaded the
most ambitious fund-raising effort in USC’s history, the Building
on Excellence campaign, which established an initial goal of $1 billion.
By the end in 2002, the campaign raised $2.9 billion, making it, at the
time, the most successful campaign in the history of higher education.
In his sixteen year tenure as senior vice president, the university raised
more than $5.5 billion in gifts and pledges.
A major focus of Kreditor’s vice presidency has been the strengthening
and expansion of the university’s alumni relations. Under his direction,
the USC annual alumni giving rate has nearly quadrupled. Kreditor established
an office of international development and alumni relations to solidify
USC’s educational partnerships, particularly in the Pacific Rim,
and has personally led many delegations to Asia to meet with educators,
alumni and friends of the university.
An expert on real estate, urban planning and design, Kreditor was founding
dean of the USC School of Urban Planning and Development before his appointment
to the senior vice presidency. Established in 1974, the School of Urban
Planning and Development was the first independent school of its kind
in the nation.
Kreditor was instrumental in establishing the school’s Lusk Center
for Real Estate in 1988. The Lusk Center helps developers, lenders, real
estate attorneys, accountants, designers and others associated with real
estate development, investment and management to join with university
faculty, students and staff in promoting real estate as a field of study
and a professional discipline. Kreditor was executive director of the
center and held the Lusk Chair in Planning and Development for a number
of years.
Although he was raised in the Northeast and graduated from the University
of Pennsylvania, Kreditor has devoted most of his professional life to
Southern California. He is prominent in civic affairs and served as chairman
of the California Building Industry Foundation and the Los Angeles Urban
Design Advisory Committee.
He has served on a number of national and international boards and commissions
and, over the years, has advised corporation, foreign governments, international
organizations and other universities. He has been a member of advisory
committees for the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes
of Health and the Urban Mass Transit Administration. He has also served
in a number of committees of the Urban Land Institute, American Planning
Association, the Association of Collegiate Schools of Planning, and the
American Institute of Architects.
He is former vice president of the International Association of Urban
and Regional Research and Education, a Paris-based organization supported
by UNESCO, and was founding member of the board of the Pacific Rim Council
on Urban Development. He has worked in Ireland, Mexico, Venezuela, Taiwan,
France and the Middle East.
Kreditor joined the USC faculty in 1966 and continues to hold a faculty
position as professor of planning and development.
Kreditor lives in San Marino, California, with his wife, Marcia, an
alumna of USC.
